FAQS - Frequently Asked Questions

1. How can I reduce moisture in the shelter?

We suggest using a product called “Damp Rid,” which can be found at most home improvement stores and some Dollar General locations. Prices typically range from $3 to $12. Dollar Tree also offers a generic version for $1.25.

2. What should I do if a large tree or vehicle falls on my shelter door during a tornado or strong winds?

We highly recommend registering with your local Emergency Management Services (EMS) agency. Inform them that you have an underground shelter installed. In emergencies where above-ground structures are compromised, your local EMS will refer to your registered location to ensure that no one is trapped by debris. Additionally, always keep your cell phone charged and with you in the shelter; if you have signal above ground, you’ll have it below as well. Consider purchasing a bottle jack to keep inside your shelter, and measure and cut a 4×4 to the appropriate height to leave in the unit for future use. By utilizing the third step down (which is extra reinforced), you should be able to open the door wide enough to signal for attention and assistance.

3. My children want to play inside the shelter. What if they accidentally lock themselves in and can’t unlock it?

You can remove each lock from the door one at a time using a 9/16 open-end wrench until you gain access.

4. What lighting do you recommend for inside the shelter?

For the SS6 and SS10 models, we recommend battery-operated round touch lights, which are available at the link below for $11.99 plus tax for five units. You can also find these at Dollar Tree and Walmart. For the SS12 and larger models, consider a bright LED rope light set from Amazon for under $13, which is easy to install. You will also need to purchase an AC adapter from Amazon for less than $15. Additionally, you’ll need a deep cycle marine battery from Walmart or Rural King and a 550 or larger AC converter from Harbor Freight.

5. What can I use to clean the inside of the shelter?

At our warehouse, we’ve had great success using alcohol/sanitizer wipes, which effectively remove dirt and grime while disinfecting. These wipes are available at nearly every store.

6. I have bad knees/back. Will it be difficult for me to enter my shelter?

Not at all! The stairs are regular steps, not a ladder. There are seven steps, and a handrail is provided for extra security and comfort.

7. Can I paint the white door a different color?

The door is white for visibility in the dark and in case of damage to your area. We recommend keeping it this color for safety reasons.

8. Is the shelter and the above-ground door EF5 approved?

Yes, all components of our shelters meet or exceed the standards set by FEMA guidelines. More information and details are available on our website or upon request.
